The King of the North has entered 10 Downing Street and regional prejudices are already pulsing through the press.

Despite decades of economic and cultural concentration in one city – London – hacks are unnerved about other places reclaiming their fair share of our national assets.

They are breathlessly questioning the northern skew of Burnham’s Cabinet, as though it’s unnatural and outlandish for a prime minister to prioritise the “regions” above our nation’s hallowed capital.

This has already fostered a perception, which will only grow during Burnham’s time in office, that his regional rebalancing agenda will come at the expense of London.

This fundamentally misunderstands the issue, and his plan for government.
