I feel like I’ve been writing about the PPE procurement scandal for half of my life.
I first started covering it in the spring/summer of 2020, when the country was desperately trying to get vital medical supplies to the frontline of the NHS.
I decided it was a good idea to monitor the government’s contracts portal, which basically releases details of all the contracts awarded by the government, and boy did I find some dirt.
It became immediately obvious that the government had funnelled contracts to firms that had been newly incorporated (i.e. PPE Medpro), companies with non-healthcare specialisms (e.g. a hotel carpeting company) and – most shockingly – to firms owned by Conservative friends and donors.
Despite the case of Michelle Mone focusing attention this week, the PPE scandal is long-running and complicated. Mone is simply the tip of very expensive iceberg.
So, as someone who probably knows more about this than anyone else, I’ve decided to record a webinar explaining the twists and the turns in this perpetual saga.
Having done a bit of research, I think the best thing would be to release a recording here, on my Substack, which can then be shared publicly among anyone who would find it useful – even those in the Isle of Man.
I will aim to record and post the video by the evening of Wednesday 20 December.
In the meantime, please do post a comment with any questions that you would like answering, and I will try my best to respond to as many as possible.
If you’d like to support my work, please do consider taking out a paid subscription. I will endeavour to produce a factsheet for paid subscribers featuring some of the most shocking facts and case studies that I have encountered during this crisis.
Thank you for your support.
